UIS Barrancabermeja officially began its academic activities on August 11, 1997, with 15 professors and 135 students enrolled in Industrial Engineering, Systems Engineering, and Technology in Productivity and Industrial Maintenance. Additionally, the Institute of Languages and the then Institute of Distance Education extended their services to this campus.
On September 4, 1997, through Superior Agreement 057, the creation of the UIS Barrancabermeja Campus was officially approved, with the aim of developing teaching, research, and extension functions in this municipality. This achievement was realized during the tenure of Rector Jorge Gómez Duarte.
On August 20, 1997, through a donation agreement between the Barrancabermeja Cultural Corporation and the Universidad Industrial de Santander, the Alejandro Galvis Galvis Public Library was loaned to UIS, providing services to both the university community and the general public. This agreement was formalized by Donation Act 186 on February 2, 1998. From that date, the library opened its services to the public, including cultural management activities supported by the work of the Cultural Directorate at the Main Campus. The Children’s Room was also inaugurated, and the International Piano Festival, held annually since 1992, became possible thanks to the collaboration between the University and the Barrancabermeja Cultural Corporation.
